Cancer meaning
Cancer is the crab, the fourth sign of the zodiac. The tropic of Cancer is named for it because the June solstice once fell among those stars. The glyph ♋ is two joined commas, a later abbreviation.

Where it comes from
The name of the tropic is the fossil. Precession moved the solstice out of the constellation, but the tropical sign still begins at the solstice. Greeks told a crab at the Hydra’s feet during Heracles’ labor. In astrology Cancer is a water sign associated with the moon. None of that makes the disease, which only shares a Latin word for crab.

Latin cancer means crab. Medicine took the word for a crawling sore. The zodiac sign did not. A chart and a diagnosis are different sentences that happen to share a noun.
