Gemini meaning
Gemini is the twins, the third sign of the zodiac. Greek myth attaches Castor and Pollux. The glyph ♊ is two uprights joined by bars — a type convention — not a portrait of the brothers.
Two pillars. The twins are the story. The mark is the abbreviation.
Where it comes from
The twin stars are obvious in the sky, which is why so many cultures found a pair here. Greeks named them the Dioskouroi. Tropical Gemini is the next thirty degrees after Taurus, an air sign in the later system, ruled by Mercury. The glyph looks like the Roman numeral II because two is the point.
Astrology
A pair is not a split personality
The sign’s traditional topics are speech, the hands, the neighborhood, going between. Modern sun-sign columns turned that into “two-faced.” The stars are two bodies that stay a pair. That is a better picture than the column.
