- NOAA station model
- Used for
- An observed calm

- Clear sky, or a missing wind icon
A circle and no staff. The wind at the station was calm. Not a clear-sky icon.
The name. Calm is the station circle with no barb. It is not a forecast of a still day.
Where it comes from
The Weather Prediction Center calls calm the circle with no barb. National Weather Service Honolulu draws 0 to 2 knots as a large circle around the sky-cover symbol. The circle you still see is the sky cover. Calm deletes the staff. It does not empty the circle. A clear and calm station is an empty circle with no staff. A cloudy and calm station is a filled circle with no staff.
The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.
Weather
What it means
The wind speed rounded into the calm bin. It is not a forecast that the afternoon will be still. A weather app’s lack of a wind icon is a different silence. This one is measured.
Questions
What does a circle with no barb mean?
The wind was calm. Honolulu plots 0 to 2 knots that way. The circle that remains is sky cover, not a clear-sky forecast.
Does calm mean clear?
No. Clouds can sit over a still station. Read the fill of the circle for the sky and the missing staff for the wind.
