Capricorn meaning
Capricorn is the goat-fish, the tenth sign of the zodiac. The composite animal is Mesopotamian. The tropic of Capricorn remembers a solstice that once fell here. The glyph ♑ is a later abbreviation of that hybrid.
A goat and a fish sharing one body. The glyph keeps both.
Where it comes from
A goat’s forequarters and a fish’s tail is the old figure, associated with Enki and with Greek tales of Pan in the Nile. The December solstice gave the tropic its name. Tropical Capricorn is an earth sign, traditionally ruled by Saturn. The glyph tries to show a horned head and a curling tail in one stroke. It is not a simple goat, and reading it as “ambition” alone loses the fish.
Astrology
The solstice left a name
As with Cancer, the tropic is evidence of where the solstice used to be. Precession moved the stars. The sign, in tropical practice, stayed with the solstice. That split is the fact worth knowing before any temperament.
