Saturn meaning
The Saturn sign is a cross with a curl, for the planet and the metal lead. In alchemy Saturn is the slow, heavy stage you cannot skip. It is not just “bad luck.”
Weight, time, and the stage of the work you cannot skip.
The name. A cross over a sickle. Lead, Saturday, the limit.
Where it comes from
Saturday, lead, the harvest sickle, old age, boundaries. To the naked eye Saturn is the slowest of the seven. Melancholy’s planet, the scholar’s as well as the mourner’s. In alchemy, putrefaction — the black stage — belongs to him. The work rots before it whitens. Calling Saturn simply “evil” is a modern flattening. The old system needed a principle of limit or the sun would burn the court down.

The black is not a mistake
Nigredo looks like failure. The texts say it is the gate. Lead is the metal you start from in the popular telling of chrysopoeia, heavy and dull and necessary. Whether a given author meant literal lead is a question about that author. The symbol’s patience is the same either way: you will not rush the heavy part.

A boundary that teaches
Saturn returns, in the later tradition, name the moment a life meets its limit and has to become accurate. The glyph’s sickle is agricultural: something is cut so that something can be kept. Time here is not a river. It is a tool.
