Jupiter meaning

The Jupiter sign is a stylized bolt or a handwritten Zeus. It means the planet and, in alchemy, the metal tin. It is not a random scribble; it is a printer’s abbreviation of the god’s name.

♃U+2643

Tin, kingship, and the god who enlarges.

The name. Often said to be a stylized zeta, for Zeus. The story is traditional, not secure.

Where it comes from

Thursday is Jupiter’s day. The metal is tin. The astronomical sign sits in the family of the seven. Expansion, law, mercy, the king who is not the sun — the sun is the center, Jupiter is the magnanimous power. In the tree of life’s later Hermetic mapping, Jupiter has a seat. That mapping is not a Roman priest’s.

Astrology

Increase, with a law inside it

Jupiter is not “more” in the abstract. In the old picture he is the god who upholds oaths and hospitality and also cannot stop growing. The benefit and the excess are the same principle. A temperate reading of Jupiter is already a moral achievement, which is why the tradition both loves him and fears a court with no Saturn.

Alchemy

Tin is the point

Before the theology, the sign labels a metal in a book of recipes. Tin cries when you bend it. The old observers liked that. If you are not in a workshop and not in a horoscope, ask why the sign was drawn before you preach it.
