Earth meaning
The alchemical sign for earth is a downward triangle with a bar. It is the cold-and-dry element: weight, body, what stays. The bar distinguishes it from water.
Weight, melancholy, and the body that remains.
The name. Water’s triangle, barred. Cold and dry.
Where it comes from
Cold and dry: black bile, autumn, the melancholic temper — which for medieval writers included scholars, not only sad people. The bar marks it off from water. Later occultism makes earth the element of the body and of pentacles, the suit of things you can hold. The planet Earth has a different astronomical sign. This triangle is the element.
Hellenic
Melancholy as a constitution
Before it was only a mood disorder, melancholy was a way of being weighted, capable of study and of stuckness. The element and the temper explain each other in the old system. You do not have to revive the medicine to understand the symbol. You do have to stop translating it as “sad rock.”
Alchemy
Cousin to salt, not the same
Salt is a principle inside every substance. Earth is one of the four roots. A text that uses them as synonyms has left the technical language. Both concern what stays. They stay for different reasons.
