Air meaning
The alchemical sign for air is an upward triangle with a bar. It is the hot-and-wet element in the old four-element physics. The bar is what keeps it from being read as fire.
Heat that does not scorch: blood, spring, thought.
The name. Fire’s triangle, barred. Hot and wet.
Where it comes from
Air is hot and wet, sanguine, of the blood, of spring. The bar distinguishes the glyph from fire — same direction, different quality. In the later occult vocabulary air becomes the element of thought and of the swords in tarot. That is a school speaking. The medieval physician meant a temperament and a season, and he would bleed you for it.

Not emptiness
Air is a stuff, in this physics, not the absence of stuff. It has qualities you can combine. Wet plus hot yields air, as dry plus hot yields fire. The system is a combinatorics of touch: how a thing feels, raised to a cosmology.

The bar is the difference
Cover the bar and you have misread the page. A great deal of alchemical notation is like this: a small stroke that changes the kingdom. Salt’s diameter, air’s bar, earth’s bar — the economy is severe, which is why a sloppy modern font can lie.
