Leo meaning

Leo is the lion, the fifth sign of the zodiac. The constellation is one of the oldest recognized figures in the sky. The glyph ♌ is a later shorthand: a curl with a tail, not a drawing of the animal.

♌U+264C

A lion on the ecliptic. The tail in the glyph is the identifier.

Where it comes from

A lion in the summer sky is shared by Mesopotamian and Greek tradition. Regulus, the little king, is the bright star at the heart. Tropical Leo is a fire sign, traditionally ruled by the sun. The glyph’s loop and tail are how a scribe writes “lion” without drawing one. Sun-sign columns kept the king and dropped the star.

The heart of the figure

Regulus is the concrete object. “Confidence” is the modern adjective. You can wear the lion. The entry’s job is to say the lion was a star-figure and a month before it was a mood.
