Moon meaning
The alchemical moon is a crescent, the sign for silver and for what changes on a schedule and returns. It is not the Islamic star-and-crescent, and it is not a mood.
What changes on a schedule, and still returns.
The name. A crescent. Silver, Monday, the tides.
Where it comes from
Silver, Monday, receptivity, the white work in alchemy. The moon is not a failed sun. In the metallic story the white stone precedes the red, and you cannot skip it. The crescent is a phase, not a broken circle — the same honesty the star-and-crescent sometimes remembers and sometimes forgets.
Alchemy
The white work
Albedo, the whitening, is a stage: the matter washed, the mirror made. People in a hurry want the sun. The texts say the moon is how you become able to bear it. Reflection is a labor.
Astrology
Change is not betrayal
A crescent tonight and a disk in a week is the moon being itself. Later moralists who want symbols to be stable dislike this. The old system did not. It gave the moon Monday and the growth of anything that swells and recedes, including illness and grain.
