Monolith
Also called the black stone, 1:4:9
A film prop in 1968, proportioned as the squares of 1, 2, and 3
Fiction symbolsMonolith meaning
The monolith in 2001 is a black rectangular solid in the proportion 1:4:9, the squares of the first three integers. Clarke and Kubrick made it the film’s unreadable object in 1968. It is a shape, not a logo. No one owns the squares. The lexicon draws the rectangle and nothing on it.
A rectangular solid. The proportion is the whole of the design.
The name. Monolith means one stone. The word is older than the film. In this cabinet it means the black rectangular solid in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick, 1968. The proportion is 1:4:9.
Where it comes from
2001: A Space Odyssey was made by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke together, the film released in 1968, the novel the same year. The monolith is the object the film will not explain. It appears among early hominids, on the Moon, and in orbit of Jupiter in the film’s version of the voyage. The prop’s proportion, stated by the production and repeated by Clarke, is 1 to 4 to 9. Those are 1 squared, 2 squared, and 3 squared. The sequence is the design. A black slab in another proportion would be a different prop. The squares are why this page is allowed to draw the thing. A rectangle in a stated ratio is geometry. It is not a trademarked animal or a lettering. Nobody owns the integers. The film owns a performance: the music, the cut, the way the slab is approached. This page does not reproduce a frame. It draws an empty rectangle in the proportion, taller than it is wide, and says what the numbers are. Readers who want a theology of the slab have the film. The film withholds the theology on purpose. A lexicon should not invent one to be helpful.
Geometry
Three squares
1, 4, and 9 are not mystical because they are squares. They are the simplest way to grow a side by integers and then square the growth. The proportion looks inevitable once you hear it, which is the effect Kubrick wanted from a simple object. Inevitable is a feeling. The arithmetic is checkable with a ruler. If a prop on a shelf is not in this ratio, it is a souvenir of the feeling and not a copy of the specification. The specification is the part that belongs in a symbol entry.
Fiction
Withheld on purpose
The slab has no inscription. The absence is the device. Later science fiction filled similar slabs with plots. Filling is a reader’s impulse that the film refuses. The Eye of Providence, linked nearby, is an eye that claims someone sees. The monolith is a block that claims nothing in words. Putting them together is a contrast, not a family. One is full of theology. The other is a proportion and a refusal.
