Valknut meaning

The valknut is three interlocked triangles found near figures that may be Odin, especially on picture stones and the Stora Hammar stone. The name is modern. No source hands us a clean definition.

Three triangles locked, near what may be Odin, and we do not have the gloss.

The name. Modern scholarly coinage: valr, the slain, and knut, a knot. No medieval caption uses it.

Where it comes from

On Gotland picture stones — Stora Hammars, Tängelgårda — three interlocked triangles sit near a figure interpreters often take for Odin, sometimes beside a burial or a sacrifice. There are two familiar drawings: a chain of three triangles, and a Borromean form. They may not have been one symbol to the carvers. Popular culture has assigned the mark more confidently than the evidence allows.

Norse

An honest gap

Death, Odin, the passage of the warrior dead: those are reasonable readings of the neighborhood the sign is carved in. They are not a dictionary definition from a Norse text. If a source offers you a precise ritual meaning with no stone and no stanza, it is newer than it sounds.

Norse

A name can be a trespass

Calling it valknut lets us talk. It also pretends the carvers shared our label. Hold the label lightly. The triangles are the evidence. The word is ours.

A hard history

The stones are the source. A modern group’s use of the mark, especially beside other appropriated Norse signs, does not inherit a Viking definition that was never written down.
