Stoic symbolsThe Stoa meaning
Stoicism is named after a building. The Stoa Poikile was a painted colonnade on the Athenian Agora where Zeno chose to talk, and his students were called the people from the porch.

A painted porch in Athens. The school is named after the building, not after a badge.
The name. Greek stoa, a colonnade. Poikile means painted, from the panels on the back wall.
Where it comes from
Peisianax, Kimon’s brother-in-law, built the Stoa Poikile in the 460s BC at the northwest corner of the Agora. It was Doric outside and Ionic within, the earliest Athenian building known to combine the two orders. Four famous paintings hung on the back wall, the Battle of Marathon among them, by Polygnotus, who painted for nothing, by Micon, who was paid, and perhaps by Panaenus. Bronze shields taken from the Spartans at Sphacteria in 425 BC hung there and could still be seen in the second century AD. Pausanias describes them at 1.15.
Diogenes Laertius says Zeno walked up and down in the colonnade called Peisianactian, and also poikile, from the paintings of Polygnotus, and spoke there because he wanted the spot to be tranquil. Under the Thirty, nearly fourteen hundred citizens had been murdered there. People came to hear him, and his pupils were called Stoics, who had at first been called Zenonians. The paintings were gone by 396, when Synesius wrote that a Roman governor had removed them. The foundations were found only in 1981 and 1982, at 13 Hadrianou Street, under T. Leslie Shear Jr. Only the western corner was excavated then. The American School returned to the centre of the building after a modern house came down in 2023.
A Greek Doric column has no base. It stands on the stylobate, carries twenty flutes that meet in sharp arrises, swells slightly, and ends in a cushion, the echinus, under a square abacus. It is the squattest order. Vitruvius called the proportions masculine. A section of this stoa’s Doric frieze, in hard poros, three Athenian feet long, was found just outside the northwest corner. When modern readers want an emblem, they reach for that column, because the porch is the one physical thing the school owns.
Stoic
The name is an address
Zenonians would have been a school named after a man. Stoics are people from a porch. Zeno picked a place with a bad memory, the killings under the Thirty, and taught there until the name meant the philosophy instead of the poets who used to loiter under the same paintings.

The Doric revival
Neoclassicism made the Doric column stand for incorruptibility. The Brandenburg Gate and the Second Bank of the United States borrow it for that.
The column means severity to an eighteenth-century builder. It does not mean Zeno.

Asked for a Stoic symbol, members suggest a single Doric column.
The suggestion is recent. The porch is not.

Living Stoic groups
The Philadelphia Stoa designed a torch through a sigma after conceding the school never had a sign. Other groups take the building’s name as a brand.
Those marks belong to living organisations. This page names them and does not draw them.

Eratosthenes
Before Zeno, Stoics meant the poets who hung about the colonnade. The philosophers made the name famous.
The word is older than the school. The school is what kept it.

Questions
Why is Stoicism named after a porch?
Zeno taught in the Stoa Poikile, the Painted Porch, on the Athenian Agora. His pupils were called Stoics, the people from that porch. They had first been called Zenonians.
Where was the Stoa Poikile?
The north side of the Athenian Agora, at its northwest corner. The foundations were identified in 1981–82 under 13 Hadrianou Street. Excavation of the centre resumed in 2023.
Is the Doric column a Stoic symbol?
It is the order of the porch’s outer colonnade, and it has no base. The school did not adopt it as a badge. Modern readers use it because the building is the one object the name refers to.
