Snow shower meaning

A snow-shower icon means snow is expected in bursts, not as a steady fall. WWIS lists snow showers apart from snow, and flurries apart from both.

Where it comes from

WWIS label snow showers sits in a different band from snow and heavy snow, and flurries have a label beside them. The Met Office prints light and heavy snow showers for day and night, separate from light and heavy snow. The logic is the shower logic: the fall can stop, and the sky can break. Flurries are a further wording. This page names them and does not pretend one picture covers every service’s flurry icon.

The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.

Weather

What it means

Snow is expected, and it is not expected to last without a break. A break is not a promise of a dry hour. The chance of precipitation, if the service prints one, still answers a different question: whether any precipitation falls in the period.

Variants

Flurries

WWIS lists flurries on their own. Many forecasts use the word for a light, brief snow shower. If the label says flurries, keep the label.

Questions

What is a snow shower icon?

It forecasts snow that begins and ends, rather than a steady snow. The Met Office draws day and night versions and light and heavy versions.

Are flurries the same as snow showers?

WWIS lists both. They are close in ordinary speech and separate in that table. Do not collapse them if the forecast uses one word.

Often confusedSnowSteady snow is the other icon. Showers are allowed to quit.
Often confusedRain showerThe shape of the forecast is the same idea. The precipitation is snow, not rain.
