Sleet meaning

Sleet, as a forecast icon, is whatever that service has labeled sleet. WWIS and the Met Office list it apart from snow and rain. Apple groups it with freezing rain and wintry mix.

Where it comes from

WWIS gives sleet its own label. The Met Office prints sleet, and sleet showers by day and night, as icons separate from snow and from rain. Apple’s guide puts freezing rain, sleet, and wintry mix on one line. English uses “sleet” for more than one fall of ice and water. This cabinet will not pick a physics the icon tables do not share. If the forecast says freezing rain, use that page. If it says snow, use that one.

What it means

The icon says a wintry mix is the expected kind of weather, under the name the service chose. It is not hail from a thunderstorm, and it is not a snow forecast with a different typeface. A station that reports ice pellets or mixed precipitation is coding an observation. The code is not this picture.

Sleet showers

The Met Office lists sleet showers by day and by night, separate from sleet. The shower form can start and stop. Steady sleet is the other icon.

Wintry mix

Apple’s name, sharing an icon with freezing rain and sleet. The phrase is a product’s basket. It is not a WWIS row.

Questions

What does a sleet icon mean?

It means the forecast is using its sleet label. WWIS and the Met Office keep that label apart from rain and snow. The word’s physics is not the same in every English-language forecast, so the page does not invent one.

Is wintry mix an official symbol?

It is Apple’s grouping, on a line with freezing rain and sleet. It is not a WWIS icon name.
