Where it comes from

The character is in the Dingbats chart. WWIS lists snow, heavy snow, snow showers, and flurries as separate forecast labels. A six-point flake in a font does not choose among them. Cloud with snow, U+1F328, is the character that puts the flake under a cloud. The snowman is a third character.

The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.

Weather

What it means

It is a flake you can type, used for winter, for decoration, and sometimes for snow in a message. A forecast of snow is the snow page. The difference is the system, not the prettiness of the arms.

Variants

Vendor art

Apple, Google, and other vendors draw one code point in different colors and shapes. None of those drawings is a WMO icon, and none of them is the line art on this page.

Worth knowing

  • U+2744 is the Unicode name SNOWFLAKE. Vendors may draw it as a color emoji. The character is still the code point. Source
