Pioneer plaque meaning

The Pioneer plaque is a drawing fixed to Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, launched in 1972 and 1973. Carl Sagan, Frank Drake, and Linda Salzman Sagan designed it. The unit is the hydrogen hyperfine transition. Fourteen pulsars locate the Sun. The figures are a man and a woman. It is a message we sent, not a reply we received.

A metal card bolted to a machine, written for a reader who is not from here.

The name. Pioneer is the name of the NASA series. The plaque is the picture fixed to Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. It is not a plaque in a church. It is an etched plate on a spacecraft that was not coming back.

Where it comes from

Pioneer 10 launched on 2 March 1972. Pioneer 11 launched on 6 April 1973. Both were going fast enough to leave the solar system. Carl Sagan argued that a craft which might outlast its makers should carry a note. Frank Drake and Sagan designed the content. Linda Salzman Sagan drew the human figures. The plate is gold-anodized aluminum. The key, in the upper left of the usual reproduction, is the hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen: two states, a line between them, and the binary digit 1. That length, 21 centimetres, and that time are the ruler and the clock. A star-like burst of lines gives fourteen pulsars, their periods in the hydrogen unit, so a reader who knows pulsars could triangulate the Sun. A diagram of the planets shows which world sent the craft, and a sketch of the craft itself gives the scale of the figures. The figures are nude, a choice that caused a public argument in 1972 and a small act of censorship in at least one printing. The argument is part of the history of the object. It is not a mystery about the science. The lexicon draws a schematic of the plaque’s layout, not a copy of the NASA etching. The etching is NASA’s. The schematic is so a reader can see the parts.

Modern

A unit before a sentence

The plaque does not begin with a greeting in English. It begins with a physical fact the designers hoped was common: the spin-flip of the hydrogen atom. If that hope is wrong, the rest of the plate is an etching. If it is right, the pulsar map has a scale. This is the opposite of a symbol that means something because a tradition taught it. The tradition is physics, and the reader is hypothetical. We have had no reply. The plaque is still a message we sent. The Wow! signal, filed nearby, is a spike we received and did not decode. They are not a pair of conversation.

Modern

Figures, and the fight about figures

The man and the woman are the part a newspaper could print and a public could scold. The scolding happened. It does not change the pulsar map. A later reader who only remembers the nude figures has remembered the controversy and lost the ruler. Salzman’s drawing is specific: a stance, a proportion, no clothes, because clothes would be a local fashion. Whether that reason persuades you is a separate question. The page records the reason and the year of the complaint. It does not upgrade the plate into a myth.
