Neptune meaning

Neptune was found on 23 September 1846 by Johann Galle at Berlin, where Urbain Le Verrier’s calculations said it would be. The sign is a trident, ♆. The USB mark’s branching shape is a later rhyme with that trident, not a use of the planet.

♆U+2646

A planet predicted on paper before it was seen, then marked with a trident.

The name. Neptune is the Roman sea god. The trident is his attribute. The name was proposed in the months after the discovery, with more than one candidate in play. The god won, and the glyph is the god’s weapon reduced to a few strokes.

Where it comes from

By the 1840s Uranus was not where the tables said it should be. Urbain Le Verrier in Paris calculated a further planet that would pull it. John Couch Adams in Cambridge had worked the same problem. On 23 September 1846 Johann Gottfried Galle, with Heinrich d’Arrest, looked at the place Le Verrier had sent to the Berlin observatory and found the point. The planet was a prediction that became an object. That order matters. The seven lights were seen first and interpreted after. Neptune was written first and seen after. The glyph came last. It is a trident, Poseidon’s and Neptune’s weapon: a vertical stroke, two barbs, and a crossbar in the usual printed form. Unicode encodes it as NEPTUNE, U+2646, ♆. There is no serious rival glyph the way Uranus has two. The sea god was the name that stuck, against other proposals that would have honored Le Verrier more directly. Astrology inherited the trident and built a temperament around the sea, dissolution, and what is not yet visible. That temperament is a late reading. The 1846 observation does not contain it. A twentieth-century trademark, the USB trident, is sometimes said to quote Neptune. The resemblance is real enough to mention and too late to be an origin. The bus and the planet share a silhouette in the loose way a logo can share a silhouette. They do not share a year.

Astrology

After the telescope, a temperament

Neptune in a modern chart is asked to mean fog, image, and the unbound. Those words are a school. They are not in Galle’s note of the night. The old planets had metals. Neptune does not inherit one by having a trident. If a page tells you the trident “means the ocean of the unconscious,” it is quoting a psychology younger than the discovery. Say the date of the psychology. The planet’s date is 1846.

Modern

A shape borrowed downward

The USB implementers needed a mark for a bus that branches. The mark they shipped looks like a trident. People noticed Neptune. The notice is a reader’s note. It is not evidence that a standards body consulted an ephemeris. This lexicon draws its own trident for the planet and a separate schematic for the bus, so the two files cannot be the same file. SuperSpeed badges and later USB wordmarks are branding on the bus. They are not new glyphs for the planet.
