Klein bottle meaning
The Klein bottle is a closed one-sided surface, described by Felix Klein in 1882. It has no edge and no inside. Any model you can hold in three dimensions passes through itself. The Möbius strip is the relative with an edge. The bottle has none.
A closed surface with one side. In three dimensions the picture has to pass through itself.
The name. Felix Klein described the surface in 1882. The German Fläche means surface. A translator’s bottle stuck in English. The object is not a container. A container has an inside. This surface does not.
Where it comes from
Klein’s surface can be built, as a thought, by taking a cylinder and joining the ends with a twist of direction so that orientation reverses. In four dimensions the joining does not require the tube to crash through its own wall. In three dimensions every glass or 3D-printed model has a self-intersection. The intersection is a defect of the room, not a feature of the surface. People love the defect because it looks like a riddle. The riddle is the embedding. The surface itself is simple to define and awkward to inhabit. It is non-orientable: a path exists that brings you back reversed, as on a Möbius strip. The difference from the strip is the edge. A Möbius strip has one edge. You can sew a disc to a projective plane’s cousin and get a Klein bottle; the usual slogan is that two Möbius strips glued along their edge make one. The slogan is a construction, not a poem. The lexicon draws the familiar self-intersecting bottle so the object is recognizable, and it says the intersection is the price of drawing it here.

No inside to put a meaning in
A symbol culture wants the bottle to mean infinity, or the soul, or a trap. The surface does not have an interior in which to keep those nouns. That is the mathematical fact people are usually trying to gesture at, and then they fill the gesture with a noun anyway. Leave the noun out. What the bottle forbids is a consistent choice of inside and outside. What it does not forbid is a finite area. It is closed and compact in the usual construction. It is not a sign for the endless. The lemniscate is that sign, and it is a different page.
Geometry
The strip, with the edge removed
Read the Möbius page for the strip with one side and one edge. Read this page for the closed case. The 1858 strip and the 1882 bottle are nineteenth-century surfaces. They are not secret diagrams of antiquity. A museum that exhibits a glass bottle is exhibiting the embedding, intersection included. The label should say so. If the label offers a spiritual interior, it has given the object the very thing the definition denies.
