Fiction symbolsHouse of El meaning
The House of El shield is the crest on Superman’s chest, in print from Action Comics in 1938. For decades the S was his initial. Man of Steel, in 2013, presented the crest as a Kryptonian character meaning hope. That reading belongs to the film. DC and Warner Bros. hold the mark.
A shield on a chest. An initial, later said to be a word.
The name. House of El is the family name the comics give Superman’s Kryptonian parents. The shield is the costume’s crest. For most of its life the S was an initial for Superman. A 2013 film said the glyph meant hope in a Kryptonian script invented for that film.
Where it comes from
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman appears in Action Comics number 1, cover-dated June 1938. The costume includes a shield with an S. The letter is English. The character is a strongman in a circus-colored suit, and the S tells you his name at the distance of a newsstand. Krypton, the planet, accretes in the comics that follow. A family name, El, accretes too. The shield can then be reread as a house crest. Rereading is a serial form’s habit. In 2013 the film Man of Steel staged a scene in which the crest is not an S at all but a Kryptonian word for hope. The scene is moving if you grant the film its language. The language was built for the scene. It is not a 1938 caption. A caption from 1938 would say the man is called Superman and the letter is his. This page prefers the caption you could have read at the start, and it records the later caption as later. The owners are DC and, through DC, Warner Bros. The mark is one of the most recognized in the century. Recognition is not a reason to reproduce it. It is a reason to say who holds it and when the story changed.
Fiction
An initial, then a house
Serial characters gather origins. The shield gathered one. El as a house explains the letter after the fact and gives other characters a way to wear a variant. The explanation is internal. It does not obligate a reader in 1938, who saw an S and understood. Both readings can be listed. Only one is first. First is the initial. The house is a gift the strip gave itself once it had a planet to flee.
Fiction
Hope is a 2013 line
The hope reading is the one people now repeat, because a film said it clearly and because hope is a better souvenir than a letter. Souvenirs are allowed. They are dated. If you quote the crest as an ancient word, you are quoting a production designer’s alphabet from the twenty-first century. The designer’s work is real work. It is not a recovered inscription. There is no Krypton to recover it from.
