Delta meaning
Delta is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, a triangle. The name is also the triangular mouth of a river, which the letter resembles. In mathematics Δ means a difference or a change. It is not the alchemical sign for fire, which is a different upward triangle.
A triangle that is a letter. Change, in a mathematician’s hand.
Where it comes from
The Greek letter comes from a Phoenician ancestor, as the rest of the alphabet does. Herodotus uses “delta” for the Nile’s mouth because of the shape. Calculus and the sciences write Δx for a finite change and sometimes a partial derivative with a different curly form. The alchemical fire sign in this cabinet is an elemental mark from early modern notation. Same rough shape, other century, other job.
Geometry
Change, written as a bump
Δx means “the difference in x.” It is a piece of grammar, like the radical sign’s bar. It does not mean transformation in the self-help sense. You can prefer the self-help sense. It arrived later, by metaphor.
Hellenic
A river mouth
The geographical delta is a letter used as a picture of land. That is the opposite of a mystery code. Someone looked at the Nile from above, or from a map, and used the word they already had for a triangle.
