Flying saucer meaning
Flying saucer is the name coined after Kenneth Arnold’s sighting on 24 June 1947 near Mount Rainier. He said the objects moved like saucers skipped across water, and he described crescent-like shapes. Journalists produced the disc. The emoji is that disc, decades later.
A journalist’s phrase for a motion, which the public turned into a shape.
The name. Saucer is Kenneth Arnold’s comparison for how the objects moved, like a saucer skipped on water. Reporters heard a shape. Flying saucer is their phrase. Arnold’s own comparison was about motion.
Where it comes from
On 24 June 1947 Kenneth Arnold, a businessman flying a small plane, reported nine objects moving at high speed near Mount Rainier. He said they flew as a saucer would if you skipped it across water. Within days, newspapers had “flying saucers.” The phrase names a disc. Arnold’s sketches and later statements describe shapes more like crescents or wings, with one object different from the rest. The disc is the press’s average. It won. By the end of that summer the disc was a national picture, helped by the Roswell Army Air Field story in July, which concerned debris and a press release, not a captured disc in the form the public now draws. The Air Force’s later investigations treated reports. They did not issue a saucer. The pictograph U+1F6F8, FLYING SAUCER, is the press’s victory coded into a character: a domed disc. The lexicon draws that public shape and says, on this page, that the founding comparison was a motion. A motion is not a blueprint. Science fiction already had discs and rockets before 1947. After 1947 the disc had a news peg, which is a different kind of reality from a vehicle.
Modern
The phrase outran the witness
Arnold was not well served by the noun that made him famous. He spent later interviews correcting the shape. The correction never caught the noun. That is a common fate of a vivid simile. This page takes the noun as the symbol, because the symbol is what people draw, and it takes Arnold’s sentence as the origin, because the sentence is what was said. Both can be printed. Only one is a disc.
Modern
A shape with a summer
The summer of 1947 is the origin of the public mark in the United States. Earlier stories of strange airships exist. They did not fix this silhouette. Later films fixed it further, until a child can draw the dome and the lights. The child’s drawing is a reader of 1947, and of cinema after 1947. It is not a memory of Rainier. The rocket page is the other silhouette of the same era, pointed and finned, inherited from weapons and from adventure pictures. The saucer is blunter. It does not come from the V-2.
