A forecast icon for smoke. Not haze, and not fog.
The name. Smoke is a WWIS label, next to the idea of haze and not identical to it.
Where it comes from
WWIS gives smoke its own label, and haze another, and fog another. Smoke is combustion. Fog is water. Haze is the broader particle veil. A station can report smoke as present weather when it is restricting the view. The forecast icon says smoke is expected. It does not identify the fire.
The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.
Weather
What it means
The period is expected to smell or look like smoke, enough to name it on the forecast. The icon is not an air-quality index. If a service prints a number for particles, that number is a measurement scale, not this picture.
Questions
What does a smoke icon mean?
Smoke is expected. It is a WWIS label of its own, not a style of haze icon.
Is smoke a kind of fog?
No. Fog is water droplets. Smoke is smoke. Both can lower visibility, which is why a station records visibility as a number either way.
