Forecast weather symbolsMist meaning
Mist, as a forecast icon, means a thin veil of droplets, listed apart from fog. It is not drizzle, and it is not haze.

A forecast icon for mist. Thinner than fog, and not drizzle.
The name. Mist sits beside fog on the Met Office guide and has its own WWIS label. The pages stay split.
Where it comes from
WWIS lists mist on its own, and fog, haze, and smoke on theirs. The Met Office guide places mist and fog next to each other as different icons. MetService states a kilometre line for fog and does not, on the icon page used here, hand mist a second number. This page will not invent one. Drizzle falls. Mist hangs.
The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.
Weather
What it means
Seeing is reduced, and the cause is water droplets, but the forecast has refused the word fog. That refusal is the content of the icon. A gray drawing of horizontal lines is easy to reuse for both. The word printed beside it is the symbol that matters.
Variants
Visibility
If you are reading a station model, use the visibility number. Mist as a forecast does not replace that number, and this cabinet does not assign mist a distance MetService did not print.
Questions
What does a mist icon mean?
The forecast expects mist rather than fog. WWIS and the Met Office both list the two separately.
Is there one visibility number for mist?
Not on the MetService icon page used here, which defines fog as under a kilometre and leaves mist unnamed by a distance. This page does not supply the missing number.
