Forecast weather symbolsClear night meaning
Clear night, as a forecast icon, means a service expects a clear sky while the local time is night. The crescent is that clock, not the Moon’s symbol.
At a glance
- System
- Forecast icon
- Used for
- An expected clear sky at night
- Not the same as
- The astronomical moon, or clear sky by day
A forecast icon for an expected clear sky after dark. Not the moon, and not a sunny day.
The name. Night is a clock reading. The crescent is the forecast’s picture for that clock, not a lunar symbol.
Where it comes from
WWIS uses a night icon when the local time is night. The Met Office prints “clear night” as its own icon, separate from “sunny day” and from “partly cloudy (night).” Apple’s guide likewise keeps night versions of clear and partly cloudy. The astronomical moon in this cabinet is a different entry.
The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.
Weather
What it means
The condition is an expected open sky. The picture changes because the sun is not the daytime disk. Nothing in the icon says the Moon is full, new, or above the horizon. A forecast can be clear and moonless. The crescent is a convention for “night,” the way rays are a convention for “day.”
Variants
Partly cloudy night
The Met Office lists partly cloudy night on its own. That is a cloud plus a night mark, and it lives with partly cloudy, not here.
Questions
What does a crescent on a forecast mean?
On a weather app it usually means the period is night and the sky is expected to be clear or mostly clear. It is not a statement about the phase of the Moon.
Is clear night a World Weather Information Service icon?
WWIS switches several skies to a night drawing when local time is night. The Met Office names “clear night” directly. The drawings are not one shared picture.
