Alpha and Omega meaning

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In the Book of Revelation God, and then Christ, is called the Alpha and the Omega: the beginning and the end. The letters are Greek. The claim is Christian.

ΑΩU+0391 U+03A9

The first Greek letter and the last, said of God and of Christ.

Where it comes from

Revelation 1:8, 21:6, and 22:13 use the phrase. Early Christian art puts A and Ω beside the chi-rho and on graves. It is a statement about time and sovereignty, using the edges of the alphabet the New Testament was written in. Omega by itself is also a Greek letter and, much later, the symbol for electrical resistance. That ohm is named for Georg Ohm. It is not this confession.

The edges of the alphabet

If you include the first letter and the last, you are claiming the whole run. That is the rhetorical force. It does not require a code. It requires an alphabet with a known order, which Greek has.

Hellenic

The letters are older than the verse

Alpha and omega were letters for centuries before Revelation. The verse uses that order. It does not invent it. A Greek grammar and a Christian confession are both true, in sequence.
