Where it comes from
Miscellaneous Symbols names it CLOUD. A forecast that means overcast, cloudy, or partly cloudy uses the service’s own icon and, more importantly, its label. WWIS splits those labels. One cloud character cannot carry the split. Station sky cover is a filled circle, not this outline.
The line drawing is original to this cabinet. It is not an agency logo, a vendor icon, or the emoji for the same idea.
Weather
What it means
Typed, it means “cloud” to a reader of emoji. It does not say how much of the sky, whether rain follows, or whether the report is a forecast. Those are the other pages.
Variants
Vendor art
Apple, Google, and other vendors draw one code point in different colors and shapes. None of those drawings is a WMO icon, and none of them is the line art on this page.
Worth knowing
- U+2601 is the Unicode name CLOUD. Vendors may draw it as a color emoji. The character is still the code point. Source
