Ik Onkar meaning

Ik Onkar means “one, the creative reality.” It is the opening of the Mul Mantar in Sikh scripture, written as the ligature ੴ. It is not a decorative “om” with a different font.

ੴU+0A74

One, and that oneness is creative.

The name. Ik, one. Onkar, the creative, sounding reality — kin to om-kara, and not its duplicate.

Where it comes from

ੴ opens the Mul Mantar and so the Guru Granth Sahib. The numeral one is written continuously with the letter: a doctrinal claim in the shape of a ligature. What follows is satnam — the name is truth — and then the string of negatives and affirmations: without fear, without enmity, beyond birth, self-existent, known by the guru’s grace.

Sikh

A sentence you can see

It is not a numeral plus an ornament. The one is not a static monad sitting above the world. Onkar says the one creates, sounds, goes on. Reading only the “1” and skipping the letter is how the sign gets turned into a slogan.

Sikh

Where it sits

Everything after it in Japji is commentary on this ligature. Later Sikh emblems, the khanda among them, are communal standards. This one is scripture. The difference matters when a mark is asked to do the work of a flag.
